Family Law

Practice Group

Payne & Jones is widely recognized in the Kansas City area and throughout Kansas for its prestigious family law practice.   Our firm was among the first in the area to develop a specialty concentration in family law practice, and throughout our history, we have committed specific members of the firm to devote themselves exclusively to practice in this specialty. Our family law group routinely manages complex marital dissolution (divorce or separation) cases involving valuation and division of substantial marital estates, frequently involving considerable family wealth or corporate, business or other valuable assets, where experience in understanding the complexities and nuances of those matters is essential.  Our firm offers a full range of other family law services as well, including preparation of pre-nuptial, post-nuptial, and non-marital agreements, child custody litigation, post-divorce matters such as support and custody modification, collaborative family law, mediation, case management, parenting coordination and appeals.

The firm’s family law practitioners have always taken active leadership roles in the legal community, participating at all levels in the process of molding and helping create the law and policy of the family law in Johnson County and Kansas.  One of our senior family law practitioners was the primary original author of the modern divorce statutes of the State of Kansas and of the guidelines used by the Johnson County courts for establishing support, maintenance and division of net worth at the time of divorce.  Another of our family law attorneys is a founding member and Master of Bench of the Johnson County Family Law American Inn of Courts and also serves on the Johnson County Family Bench/Bar Committee.

Our family law group is dedicated to the creative resolution of family law matters, with a firm commitment to minimizing unnecessary conflict, preserving our clients’ assets, and promoting the health and well-being of our clients, their families and their children.
